On Thursday US President Donald Trump said that he had seen evidence that the new coronavirus is linked to a laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan and threatened to impose new customs tariffs on Chinese goods.
Asked if he had seen anything that gave him great confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the source of the Covid-19 outbreak, Trump said, “Yes, I have [seen].”
When reporters in the White House called on Trump to give details of why he is so convinced, Trump replied, “I can’t tell you that.”
When Trump was asked about the news that he could cancel US debt to China in a dispute over the origin of the coronavirus, he said: “it can be done with tariffs.”
On Thursday U.S. intelligence said that the new coronavirus was not “artificially created or genetically modified,” but it is still being investigated whether the pandemic was caused by contact with infected animals or an accident at the Wuhan laboratory.
